While the story of Jonah is a very familiar one to most of us, the point of the story is one we may not be all that familiar with.

We see the heart of Jonah in Chptr 4.1- 3

Jonah was selfish

  • I knew you were like this!
  • Didn’t I tell you I didn’t want this to happen!

    Jonah was self righteous

  • In essence a comparison – setting ourselves up as the standard
  • This country – these people – this religion – they aren’t me, they don’t measure up to me

    Jonah was arrogant

  • He somehow thought that he only deserved God’s mercy
  • I don’t like them, they should all just die and go to Hell.

    Jonah was forgetful

  • Jonah forgot the only reason he was still alive was the undeserved, radical mercy of God
  • Jonah forgot that he was nothing

We can see the heart of God in Chptr 4.4-11

He shows Jonah the meaning of compassion – He loves these people

He shows Jonah who the Ninevites really are – His created ones

We must see these people as the objects of God’s love and mercy , not as objects of our hatred, displeasure

We must examine our hearts by asking ourselves these 2 questions:

    Who are my Ninevites?

    Am I Jonah?
